Item Synthesis and characterization of a urethane dimethacrylate resin with applications in dentistry(JOURNAL OF POLYMER MATERIALS, 2004) Krishnan, VK; Lizymol, PP; Abraham, JKA urethane molecule with terminal methacrylate groups [UDMA] was synthesized by reacting 2.1 moles of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate [HEMA] with 1 mole of hexamethylene diisocyanate [HMDI] using a tin catalyst and characterized using FT-IR, NMR and HPLC techniques. Light curable dentine bonding agents based on primer/resin system were formulated by mixing 5 to 20 parts by weight of UDMA resin with Bisphenol A-Glycidyl methacrylate [BIS-GMA] and incorporating traces of a photoinitiator and a tertiary amine accelerator. Urethane resin could be incorporated up to 20 wt% into the BIS-GMA resin without difficulty. Shear and tensile adhesive strengths at the metal/composite and dentine/composite interfaces were determined for composites bonded onto metal and dentine surfaces using the bonding agent. Values obtained at the dentine/composite interface were compared with those obtained for five control bonding agents. Maximum strength values were observed for formulations containing 20% urethane both at the brass and dentine/composite interfaces. Urethane containing systems were found to have comparable bond strengths to imported controls and non-urethane containing bonding agents.
